Dr. Jemima Kamano
Assistant Program Manager for AMPATH Chronic Disease Management
Dr. Kamano grew up in
Nakuru, Kenya and attended Nairobi University. She decided to
pursue medicine because of the career talks she was exposed to in
her third year of high school and also because she grew up watching
the television show ER. For 2 years she worked as the Chief Medical
Officer at AMPATH and oversaw a large number of the rural clinics.
After leaving to complete her post-graduate work in Nairobi, she
returned to Eldoret in 2009 and was appointed to her current
position in 2011. She has seen remarkable improvement in care
delivery at the lower level but can often be frustrated by
inconsistent drug supply and the challenge of dealing with social
issues. Dr. Kamano spends about half of her time on the hospital
wards. Her husband is a surgeon and they have a three year old
son.
