USAID 4TheChild Project Supports the Launch of Child Protection Policies in Bungoma and Busia
The USAID 4TheChild project supported Bungoma and Busia counties in launching their respective County Child Protection Policies, joining Kakamega County that rolled out its policy in April 2023.
The event was presided over by the Principal Secretary (PS) in the State Department for Children Welfare and Social Protection, CPA Carren Ageng’o, accompanied by Governor H.E. Ken Lusaka.
The PS lauded Bungoma county government and its development partners for developing the children policy and noted that this was a significant milestone in promoting child welfare in the county.
In his remarks, H.E. Kenneth Lusaka, the Governor of Bungoma County, noted that the policy provides a structured framework to address issues facing children in the county including neglect, abuse, and limited access to essential services.
In Busia, the County Commissioner Mr. Chaunga Mwachaunga presided over the occasion. The county children policy outlines key strategies in addressing teenage pregnancies, HIV-related vulnerabilities, sexual and gender-based violence, and defilement.
The development, publication and the launch of the policy documents was made possible through financial and technical assistance from USAID 4TheChild in collaboration with other child protection advocates. Kisumu and Siaya counties will soon develop similar policies.
Since 2021, USAID 4TheChild has invested more than KES 200 million ($1.6 million USD) in Bungoma and KES 360 million ($2.8 million USD) in Busia to support orphans and vulnerable children to overcome education barriers such as access, retention and completion; access health services; and promote household economic strengthening interventions.
