AMPATH Uzima Delivers County Health Asset Transfer to West Pokot County
Through the support of the United States Government, AMPATH Uzima officially transferred health assets valued at KES 16,386,986 ($126K USD) to the West Pokot County Government during a ceremony held at the Governor's Residence in Kapenguria in mid-September. West Pokot is one of four counties supported by AMPATH Uzima to receive health assets through the ongoing transition process. The event brought together H.E. Governor Simon Kachapin, AMPATH Uzima Chief of Party Prof. Sylvester Kimaiyo, members of the County Executive Committee, chief officers, county officials, and representatives of the AMPATH Uzima team. The asset transfer was the culmination of a collaborative process spearheaded by a joint committee comprising representatives from both AMPATH Uzima and the County Government.
In his remarks, Governor Kachapin expressed his appreciation to AMPATH Uzima and the United States Government for their longstanding partnership with West Pokot County. He noted that the programme has restored hope to countless families through quality health, medical and technical support, adding that the transferred assets will further strengthen service delivery across health facilities and enhance the county's capacity to provide quality healthcare to its residents.
Professor Sylvester Kimaiyo thanked the County Government, led by Governor Kachapin, for its steadfast collaboration in strengthening healthcare in West Pokot. He highlighted the county's significant progress in eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV, with transmission rates declining from 15% in 2020 to 11% in 2021, when AMPATH Uzima began supporting HIV services in the county, and further reducing to 7.8% in 2026, bringing the county closer to the national elimination target of 5% or below. He added that the ongoing Government-to-Government (G2G) transition marks the beginning of a new chapter that will strengthen county ownership, leadership and the sustainability of health programmes while preserving the gains made over the years.
The ceremony also featured the launch of the ISRS Operational Plan (2025–2027), the County TB Strategic Operational Framework (2023/24–2027/28), and the County Syndemic Diseases Operational Plan (2025–2030). A symbolic flag-off of the Integrated Specimen Referral System (ISRS) riders, equipped with their protective gear and specimen transportation equipment, indicating the county's commitment to efficient specimen referral services. The event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony to celebrate the enduring partnership between AMPATH Uzima, and West Pokot County.
