Dr. Joe Mamlin was one of the original four Indiana University School of Medicine faculty members who helped begin IU’s partnership with Moi University as they established Kenya’s second public medical school in 1990. In 2000, Joe and his wife Sarah Ellen returned to Kenya to spend one year after retirement, but found themselves in the epicenter of the HIV pandemic. They stayed for almost two decades, partnering with Kenyan colleagues to provide care to more than 200,000 HIV+ patients. The Mamlins returned to Indiana to retire again in 2019.
Lukoye Atwoli is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Moi University and former Dean of School of Medicine. He was in the 5th graduating class of Moi’s Medical School, and is an accomplished psychiatrist with robust public health involvement and collaboration with AMPATH to improve Kenya’s health care system. He also writes a weekly column for Kenya’s Sunday Nation. His story is titled: My African Elephant Encounter: A legacy of tenacity and dependability
Lea Anne Einterz, LSW, holds a Masters in Social Work from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. She has been an ardent supporter of the AMPATH partnership for decades and spent a year in Kenya as the partnership began in 1990. Her Tusker Tale is titled: The Ripple Effect.
Professor Kimaiyo is the Executive Director of Care for AMPATH. He is also an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at Moi University and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. He has been involved in all aspects of AMPATH since its inception. His story is titled: A Kenyan Tale: AMPATH Building Blocks are Personal
Dr. Sam Milligan is a physician emeritus at Nephrology Physicians, LLC in South Bend Indiana. He’s an alum of the IU School of Medicine and he and his wife Anna are members of the AMPATH Development Board. His story is titled: Noncommunicable Disease Management
Dr. Loehrer is a medical oncologist and director at the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center. He is a prolific clinical researcher and specialist in the treatment of a variety of cancers including testis, bladder, colon, pancreas and, most notably, thymus. Loehrer was the founding chair of the Hoosier Oncology Group (now Hoosier Cancer Research Network) for two decades, which conducted trials in 20 countries around the world. His story is titled: Change
Helen Li is a third year student at the IU School of Medicine who has already visited Eldoret, Kenya twice, first as a Slemenda scholar for a summer and more recently conducting research as a Doris Duke Fellow. Her story is titled: Emphasize
Katey Einterz Owen is the director for neglected tropical diseases and the former deputy director for vaccine development at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle, Washington. She has a PhD in molecular virology from Purdue University and is a native of Indianapolis. Her story is titled: A High School Legacy
