Dr. Laura Ruhl
AMPATH Pediatric Team Leader and Assistant Visiting Professor of Clinical Pediatrics
Dr. Ruhl had her first experience in
Eldoret in 2002 as a first year Indiana University medical student
through the Slemenda Scholarship program. She returned to Eldoret
as a fourth year medical student and then completed her residency
in internal medicine and pediatrics at IU before coming back to
AMPATH as the pediatric team leader for a two year term. Dr. Ruhl
had previously lived in Uganda for a year working in public health
and is originally from Indianapolis, Indiana. She rounds in the
hospital, teaches at academic conferences every morning, works with
the primary healthcare team to deliver pediatric care and helps
supervise the visiting medical students and residents. She is
adjusting well to Kenyan life and has learned that you have to
stand back and find ways to build the system because you can't help
every individual. She has a garden where she grows many of the
vegetables she can't find easily in Eldoret, and she has created
her second family with the community of friends she has made
there.
