AMPATH Uzima Advances Diagnostic and Digital Health Capacity in Trans Nzoia County

AMPATH Uzima, through the support of the United States Government, marked a major milestone in strengthening healthcare service delivery in Trans Nzoia County with the provision of medical and information, communication and technology (ICT) equipment worth KES 14 million ($108,000 USD) to the County Government of Trans Nzoia.

The equipment conferral took place during the commissioning of St. Teresa Mother and Baby Level 4 Hospital, formerly known as Tom Mboya Mother and Child Hospital, located in Bondeni Sub-location.

The commissioning ceremony was presided over by H.E. George Natembeya, Governor of Trans Nzoia County, and brought together county leadership, health sector stakeholders, and development partners.

As part of the support, AMPATH Uzima facilitated the procurement of an AI-powered digital X-ray machine with advanced image interpretation capabilities. The equipment will significantly enhance the county’s capacity to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) among both children and adults, marking a major advancement in TB screening and early detection services.

In addition, the program provided seven brand-new desktop computers to strengthen use of electronic medical records (EMR) across the county. This contribution aligns with the ongoing partnership between AMPATH Uzima and the County Government to ensure that all 73 care and treatment sites in Trans Nzoia County are adequately equipped with the infrastructure required for EMR implementation. The initiative aims to strengthen continuity of care, improve patient data management, and support the implementation of a comprehensive monitoring and reporting system.

To further enhance functionality at the EMR sites, the program will also support network connectivity and power backup through the installation of routers and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units, ensuring uninterrupted service delivery and data security.

The handover process was formally sealed through the signing of the consignment by the AMPATH Uzima Chief of Party, Prof. Sylvester Kimaiyo and H.E. Governor George Natembeya, underscoring the strong collaboration between the program and the county government.

The ceremony also marked the official launch of the Trans Nzoia County Nutrition Plan (2023–2027), a key policy document jointly developed by AMPATH Uzima and the County Government of Trans Nzoia through the Department of Health and Sanitation Services. The plan provides a strategic framework for improving nutrition outcomes across the county.

AMPATH Uzima remains committed to sustained collaboration with the County Government of Trans Nzoia to strengthen health systems and improve the quality of healthcare services for communities.
