AMPATH Uzima Transfers Healthcare Assets as Government-to-Government Transition Begins

In a celebration of partnership, progress and a shared vision for stronger healthcare, AMPATH Uzima has officially commenced the transfer of healthcare assets to county governments. 

As part of the ongoing Government-to-Government (G2G) transition, AMPATH Uzima, with support from the United States Government through the Department of State, officially transferred health assets valued at KES 61,770,896.59 ($475K USD) to the County Government of Uasin Gishu. 

The landmark ceremony, held at the County Government Headquarters, brought together county leadership, healthcare workers, development partners and the AMPATH team to celebrate more than three decades of collaboration dedicated to improving the health and well-being of communities. 

Presided over by H.E. Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim, alongside the Deputy Governor, County Executive Committee members (County Ministers), senior county officials, and AMPATH leadership led by Professor Sylvester Kimaiyo on behalf of the Moi University Vice Chancellor, Principal of the College of Health Sciences and CEO of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, the event marked another important milestone in the enduring partnership between AMPATH, MTRH, the County Government of Uasin Gishu and the United States Government through the U.S. Department of State. 

The assets included medical equipment, office infrastructure, furniture and other essential resources that have enabled healthcare workers to deliver quality, efficient and patient-centered services across the county.  

During the ceremony, the county also received 29 brand-new three-in-one desktop computers, which have been allocated to health facilities across Uasin Gishu to enhance digital health services and improve health information management. The transition also included personal protective equipment (PPEs), face masks and hand sanitizer, reaffirming the partnership's continued commitment to supporting frontline healthcare workers and strengthening service delivery. 

Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Bii expressed his appreciation to AMPATH for its unwavering partnership and transformative contribution to healthcare in Uasin Gishu. He acknowledged the programme's role in positioning the county as a leader in healthcare innovation through investments in digital health, comprehensive HIV care and treatment, health systems strengthening and workforce capacity development. 

"AMPATH has been an invaluable partner in strengthening our health system and improving the lives of our people. Through innovation, capacity building, and sustained collaboration, this partnership has positioned Uasin Gishu as a leader in healthcare delivery," the Governor said. 

The Governor affirmed the County Government's commitment to safeguarding and optimally utilizing the assets as part of its continued investment in strengthening healthcare services for residents. 

"As we are approaching an important phase in our journey through the Government-to-Government (G2G) transition, this transition seeks to strengthen the partnership between the United States Government and the Government of Kenya while enhancing county ownership and leadership of health programmes," said Professor Kimaiyo. 

Professor Kimaiyo further reaffirmed that AMPATH remains fully committed to supporting Uasin Gishu County throughout the transition, ensuring that the gains achieved over many years of partnership are sustained while strengthening the county's health system for the future. 

Over the years, the partnership has delivered several transformative investments across the county. Among the most notable is the installation of the Digital MinXray System at Huruma Sub-County Hospital, which has significantly enhanced access to timely diagnostic imaging, particularly for tuberculosis and other chest diseases. By bringing quality imaging services closer to communities, the technology has strengthened clinical decision-making, reduced referral delays and improved patient outcomes. 

AMPATH has also played a pivotal role in advancing the county's digital health agenda through the implementation of the AMPATH Medical Record System (AMRS) at facilities including Kesses Health Centre. The system has enhanced service delivery, improved data quality, strengthened continuity of patient care and enabled more informed, evidence-driven clinical and management decisions. 

The ceremony culminated in the official signing of the Asset Handover Agreement by representatives of the County Government and AMPATH Uzima, witnessed by the County Attorney and invited guests. A ceremonial cake-cutting crowned the occasion, symbolizing more than three decades of partnership founded on trust, innovation, and a shared commitment to improving lives. 

As counties continue to assume greater ownership of health programmes through the Government-to-Government transition, the milestone represents more than the transfer of assets—it reflects a shared commitment to sustainability, stronger county leadership and resilient health systems that will continue serving the people of Uasin Gishu for generations to come.
